Ozone Therapy
Gentle, Natural Healing with Ozone Therapy

Ozone therapy is a minimally invasive dental treatment that uses medical-grade ozone to help eliminate harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi while supporting the body’s natural healing response. It can be used to help treat early-stage decay, disinfect affected areas, and promote healthier gums and oral tissues.

Ozone Therapy in Houston, TX

At Total Wellness Dental, we are excited to now offer oxygen/ozone therapy as part of our
biologic and wellness-focused approach to dentistry. Ozone therapy is an advanced treatment
designed to help reduce harmful bacteria and support the body’s natural healing process in a

gentle, minimally invasive way.

Minimally Invasive

Ozone therapy works without cutting, drilling, or removing healthy tooth structure, making it a conservative option for supporting oral health.

Gentle and Comfortable
Treatment is typically quick and painless, with no need for anesthesia in most cases, making it ideal for anxious or sensitive patients.
Biocompatible
Medical-grade ozone breaks down quickly into oxygen, leaving no chemical residue and making it safe to use alongside other dental treatments.
Supports Natural Healing
Ozone helps stimulate the body’s natural repair processes, encouraging healthier tissue response and recovery after treatment.
Reduces Bacterial Load Safely
It effectively targets harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi in the mouth, helping to disinfect areas without harsh chemicals or antibiotics.
May Improve Healing Response & Circulation
Ozone therapy is often associated with increased oxygenation in tissues, which can support improved circulation and a more efficient healing environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Ozone is simply an energized form of oxygen and has been studied for many years in both
medicine and dentistry. It has been used in biologic and integrative dentistry to help support
disinfection and healing in a more holistic way.

Ozone therapy may be administered as a liquid or a gas. Your dentist applies it directly to the area in need of treatment, such as a cavity, a gum pocket, or a tooth with a root canal infection.

Ozone therapy may not replace root canal therapy in all cases, but it helps eliminate residual bacteria, which lowers your risk of root canal treatment failure or reinfection.

Lowering Your Risks for Oral Health Complications

To lower your risks for tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth infections, we recommend:

  • Brushing and flossing at least twice daily
  • Visiting us for checkups and teeth cleanings every six months
  • Adopting a diet low in sugar and acidity
  • Talking to the dentist if you suspect nighttime teeth grinding
  • Reporting oral health changes to our dental office as soon as possible

Signs of tooth decay include a spot on the enamel or tooth sensitivity. Signs of a root canal infection include gum swelling and a severe toothache.

It’s important to note that you can have an asymptomatic cavity or emerging infection.

What Is Oxygen/Ozone Therapy?

The mouth naturally contains many microorganisms that normally live in balance with the body.
However, when harmful bacteria begin to dominate, infection and inflammation can develop.
Oxygen/ozone therapy helps disinfect these areas safely and effectively while supporting healthy
surrounding tissues.

When introduced into the treatment area, ozone creates what is known as a “transient oxidative

burst.” Harmful microorganisms have little defense against this reaction, allowing ozone to
reduce bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens without the harsh side effects often
associated with stronger chemicals or medications.

Natural Healing in Dentistry: How Medical-Grade Ozone Fights Cavities and Gum Disease

August 22, 2026

Do you suspect early gum disease or an emerging cavity? Do you notice bleeding gums when you brush and floss or a particularly sensitive tooth? Do you want to seek treatment but wish there were natural remedies available?

We want to help!

Medical-grade ozone targets and destroys specific bacteria at the cellular level, including those that lead to cavities and gum inflammation. Your dentist in Houston, TX, may use ozone therapy to prevent antibiotic resistance or in combination with more traditional treatment methods.

How Ozone Can Help in Dentistry

Ozone therapy can enhance many aspects of dental care when properly applied, including:

  • Periodontal (gum) therapy
  • Root canal disinfection
  • Early cavity management
  •  Biological and holistic dental treatments
  • Healing support after procedures
  • Reducing harmful oral bacteria
  • Pediatric and minimally invasive dentistry

For patients with periodontal disease, ozone can be introduced into infected gum pockets using
ozonated water, ozonated oils, or oxygen/ozone gas to help disinfect the area and support
healthier gums.

In root canal therapy, ozone helps sterilize even the smallest canals and microscopic tubules
within the tooth, supporting a cleaner and more biological treatment approach.
Ozone may also help arrest early tooth decay by reducing the bacteria responsible for cavities. In
some situations, this can allow for more conservative treatment and less drilling.
